Read moreIt is these picture postcard villages that the Luberon is probably best known for. Whether it is the artists’ village of Gordes, red Roussillon or bustling Apt, many of the iconic villages including Menerbes, Oppede, Lacoste and Bonnieux were immortalised by Peter Mayle in A Year in Provence.
There are many beautiful villages throughout the region to visit, all worth exploring. However, if we had to pick the best to visit, these are our favourite five.
Bonnieux
Bonnieux is one of the most impressive villages of the Luberon region not only in size but also in amenities with a whole array of restaurants, cafes, a good market on Friday and even a bakery museum.
Gordes
The village of Gordes is one of the most photographed villages of Provence and several famous films have been set in the village. Just a mile from Gordes is the Village des Bories, an open-air museum made up of twenty or so traditional drystone huts that have been reconstructed in celebration of the skills and beauty of this architectural style which stretches back over many centuries.
Oppede Le Vieux
Situated halfway up the northern slopes of the Luberon massif, the dramatic and haunting Oppède le Vieux is coming back to life after years of abandonment. This magnificent little hill-top village is built high on a rocky outcrop. To visit, leave your car in the car park at the base of the village before following the picturesque path up the hill. You will be enchanted by this historic village and it is a pleasure to wander around this village and admire the charming 15th and 16th century houses that have been skilfully restored.
Loumarin
Much like Oppede le Vieux, Loumarin is often referred to as the jewel of the region and one of the most beautiful villages in France. A must see and a real delight in the summer with cafes, restaurants, shops, and castle.
Saignon
Saignon has the most distinctive outline of any Luberon village, with its rock squared off by nature as if to look from like an impregnable castle. There are superb views of the surrounding countryside from the top of the village. Also, worth a visit is the impressive Romanesque church.
