The one place that epitomises all of this and is situated at the heart of the town is the Cours Mirabeau. This beautiful tree lined avenue lined with cafes and elegant buildings as well as three magnificent and varied water fountains including the stunning Fontaine de la Rotonde.
Read moreAix en Provence can be easily discovered on foot. The old town lies just off the Cours Mirabeau. It is full of shops, museums, and imposing 17th century mansions as well as three markets.
On the other side of the Cours Mirabeau is the Quartier Mazarin. This is a genteel residential neighbourhood with several beautiful 17th century ‘hôtels’ (grand townhouses).
A little away from the centre is Paul Cezanne’s studio. The artist spent his childhood in Aix en Provence and some of his most famous paintings depict the surrounding countryside including many of Montagne Sainte Victoire. This iconic massif dominates the local landscape and was one of the artists favourite subjects. The studio is maintained as it was on his death in 1906.
