Avignon is one of the most historic cities in France, outside of Paris. For several decades in the 14th century, it was the capital of Christendom. However, for many it is more well known for its famous bridge that is celebrated in the nursery rhyme Sur le Pont d’Avignon.
With Select Villas Avignon can be explored as often as you like whilst holidaying at one of our nearby villas, complete with your own pool.

Priceless art and grand apartments are on show at the magnificent palace which, not surprisingly is at the heart of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The nearby mighty River Rhone marks the western limit of Provence. Wealth and ideas have flowed along this natural highway down the ages, with many cultures leaving their mark on the region. The world-famous Pont d’Avignon, or Pont Saint-Bénézet linked the two banks of the river for centuries. Its origins date back to the 11th century although it has been re-built many times due to floods and war. It was finally abandoned in the 17th century. Of the 22 arches that spanned the river only four remain.
The song Sur le Pont d’Avignon dates back to the 15th century and is about a dance performed on the bridge. Although widely accepted that it describes dancing on (‘sur’) the bridge, some have maintained that events took place under (‘sous’) on small islands.
Well worth a visit a few miles to the north is Chateauneuf du Pape. The now-ruined castle built by a later pope is a further legacy of that papal schism and still produces acclaimed red wines from the surrounding vineyards.
