The South of France is an amazing land of contrast. Here you can discover the many facets of a region whose reputation goes before it. From a stylish resort to an unspoilt hill-top village; from the latest high-tech buildings to glorious Roman architecture; from snow-capped mountains to deserted beaches, they all exist side by side in apparent harmony in this most famous of regions.
Renowned for its beauty and climate, the Cote d’Azur (also known as the French Riviera) has inspired many artists and its popularity with the British has grown ever since Queen Victoria patronised its shores in the19th century. Then, most of the coastal communities would have been engaged in fishing.

The Riviera boasts some of the best-known resorts in the world; Cannes, Nice, St Tropez and Monte Carlo. These haunts of the rich and famous are a stark contrast to the beautiful, tranquil countryside that lies just a few miles inland. No matter how many times you’ve seen it before, that first glimpse of the azur-blue Mediterranean is always magical. Who could resist dipping a toe in those sparkling blue waters, which lend their name to this dramatic stretch of coastline between Hyeres in the west and lovely Menton in the east?
By far the largest resort on this coastal strip is Nice, whose sandy beaches, temperate climate, atmosphere and good transport links attract visitors year-round. Nearby lie the yachting mecca of Antibes; Cagnes-sur-Mer, where Renoir retired; and Villefranche-sur-Mer, with its beautiful harbour. Exclusive villas nestle in seclusion on the Cap d’Antibes, Cap Ferrat and Roquebrune-Cap-Martin headlands, while just up the coast lies the tiny kingdom of Monaco. Looking down on this scene are the attractive hill villages of Eze, Haut-de-Cagnes, St-Paul-de-Vence and Biot. Inland, Grasse – perfume capital of the world – sits in its own sea of lavender fields. Below Nice, on Napoule Bay, lies star-studded Cannes.
Beyond here, the red peaks of the Massif de l’Esterel plunge into the sea, forming rocky coves. The ‘corniche’ coast road winds down to seaside Agay, elegant St Raphael and Frejus at the mouth of the River Argens. Inland, near Fayence, medieval Bargemon is one of the prettiest villages in the Var region. Across the Argens estuary the coast road continues past St Aygulf, Les Issambres, Ste Maxime and Port Grimaud at the foot of the Massif des Maures – home to wild tortoises and charming hill villages like Plan-de-la-Tour and La Garde-Freinet. These highlands hug St Tropez Bay, sheltering its golden beaches and racy resort. Offshore lies lovely Porquerolles, largest of the Iles d’Hyeres, accessible by boat from resorts like Cavalaire-sur-Mer, Le Lavandou and Hyeres.[/hide-this-part]
