Visit the popular Puy du Fou theme park on a warm summer’s evening to see a magnificent after-dark extravaganza of light, fireworks, sound and action, set against the backdrop of an old castle. Over a thousand actors and a vast cast of animals relate the history of the area, from the Middle Ages to World War II in spectacular montage.
3 Pedal your way along a railway line
Take a ride on a pedal-powered buggy for four on a former railway line. From an old station the route takes you through unspoilt countryside for six miles, over a viaduct across a river to the terminus, where a special turntable allows you to turn around the buggy and head back again.
4 See the animals at Les Sables d’Olonne Zoo
Set in a lush, natural setting Les Sables d’Olonne Zoo is home to some 360 animals from around fifty endangered species. You will see giraffes, pandas, lions and the stars of the show – the gibbons – all kept in an environmentally-friendly way.
5 See the cars from the golden age of motoring
The Vendee Automobile Museum at Talmont St Hilaire is a fine collection of mainly French cars that hark back to the golden age of motoring when it was in its early pioneering stage. One man, and his family’s continuing passion, for engineering and cars has ensured the preservation of over 200 vehicles many of which are on display surrounded by an astonishing collection of period posters and billboards.
