The colours are vibrant in the sunny South of France. The lavender fields in full bloom in mid-July, the turquoise sea lapping on a white-sand beach, the locally grown fruit and vegetables piled high on a market stall.
The mighty River Rhone heads due south on its way to the sea and the wide-open landscape of the Camargue delta with salt marshes and rice paddies.
As the river flows south, it passes close to the lovely town of Orange and the world’s best preserved ancient Roman theatre. A little further downstream it passes through Avignon, home to the Pope’s Palace, once the largest building of its time and the famous (incomplete) bridge that is best remembered in the French song Sur Le Pont d’Avignon (On the Avignon Bridge). With the coast almost in site, the river passes through another of the jewels of the South of France – Arles. It is famed for inspiring the paintings of Van Gogh. Once a provincial capital of ancient Rome, Arles is also known for many remains from that era, including the Arles Amphitheatre.
Only a few short miles west is another Roman remain that is even more impressive than the amphitheatre in Arles, the Pont du Gard. Built as an aqueduct to carry water to the city of Nimes, it spans the River Gard on three levels and is a site not to be missed if holidaying in the area.
We are delighted to feature a few holiday properties in our South of France villa portfolio very close to the Pont du Gard.
Most of Provence lies to the east of the Rhone, stretching as far as the Italian border and includes the coastal strip and surrounding hinterland know as the Cote d’Azur or French Riviera.
Much of inland Provence is hilly if not mountainous with massifs such as the fashionable Luberon, the dramatic Sainte Baumes and the wild Maures. The distinctive red rock of the Esterel plunges down to the coast, thus creating one of the many famous and dramatic coastal roads in the South of France and known as the Gold Corniche.
If you take this road east from Saint Raphael you may get glimpses of the coastline stretching into the distance. Just listing some of the names of the towns and resorts lining the shore oozes style and elegance; Cannes, Antibes, Juan les Pins, Nice, Beaulieu, St Jean Cap Ferret and Menton.
Many of our South of France villas can be found along this stretch of the coast.
Plus, let us not forget St Tropez, sitting alone and aloof away from these other resorts. This former fishing village still retains some its old charm, but is now a playground for the rich. Here expensive motor yachts, moored cheek by jowl and overlook the quayside cafes where people come to see and be seen.
