The Vendee cannot be bettered for a family beach holiday. Within comfortable driving distance of Channel ports, the region boasts a sunshine record equal to the Riviera and has long, gently shelving beaches, fishing ports and small resorts dotted along the coastline which become lively in high season.
A number of family-friendly resorts, St Jean de Monts, Longeville-sur-Mer, Jard-sur-Mer, La Tranche-sur-Mer, La Faute-sur-Mer, Bretignolles and, the largest Les Sables d’Olonne – where our Vendee villas are concentrated, have developed along the sandy shoreline, offering water-based activities for all ages.

This peaceful countryside is criss-crossed with footpaths and quiet country lanes – ideal for long cycle rides and walking. For golfers the Vendee offers a good selection of quality, 18-hole golf courses, many surrounded by verdant countryside or coastal courses with stunning sea views.
This is a place to relax, explore and discover. All this you can do from one of Vendee villas.
A characteristic of this countryside is the typical Vendeen house – long and low with traditional pan-tiled roof. Here, the centres of Lucon, Fontenay-le-Comte and Chantonnay offer a wide range of facilities for the holidaymaker.
Today’s tranquil rural scene belies a turbulent past, however. At Le Puy du Fou, close to Cholet, a violent chapter in the history of the Vendee is remembered, bearing witness to a massacre in 1793 of thousands of royalist supporters from the region by the Republican authorities. Today, Le Puy du Fou is a fantastic attraction for all ages, and more than a theme park in the traditional sense. It offers a selection of wonderful historical shows ranging from Roman circus games to world-class falconry. Plus, on summer evenings, there is a memorable sound and light show.
Along the southern boundary of the Vendee, inland from La Rochelle, lies the delightful Marais Poitevin, an area of fenland criss-crossed by canals, many navigable. This tranquil wetland, known locally as the Venise Verte – Green Venice – is protected by Regional Park status. The best way to discover this wildlife haven is by boat and these can be hired from several local centres, including the pretty village of Coulon.
