Away from the beach or pool there is plenty to see and do out and about in Vendee. The mainly flat landscape is criss-crossed with quiet lanes making it perfect cycling country for all levels. Plus, the local tourist organisation has some great guides on cycle routes.

On holiday in Vendee, you shouldn’t miss a trip to Puy de Fou. A theme park based on French history turns out to be spectacle-laden extravaganza culminating in an amazing son et lumiere display.

For a quieter day out, the Marais Poitevin is recommended. A marshland of intertwined canals, best explored by boat, is known – quite rightly, as the Green Venice.

For a trip to an island you can choose between Noirmoutier which is accessible by bridge or the famous Passage du Grois tidal causeway or take a boat trip to the smaller Ile d’Yeu which lies just off the Vendee coast.
