Boasting the most spectacular coastal scenery in France, Brittany has firmly established itself as a favourite holiday destination. The long coastline offers a great diversity of seascapes – on the north coast, long sandy beaches give way to intimate coves between stunning rock formations and further west, long inlets and estuaries cut deep into the mainland. The extreme west is a wild coastline of rocky capes weathered by Atlantic storms. To the south, it is softer and warmer with a mix of long sweeps of sand, sheltered coves and river inlets, all dotted with small, colourful fishing ports. Inland, the picturesque heather and gorse-covered moors play host to meandering rivers and prehistoric monuments.
This is a place to relax, explore and discover. All this you can do from one of our Brittany villas.
Read moreBrittany is alive with folklore, festivals and tradition. Here, religion mixed with pagan myth and Arthurian legend create rich and colourful pageants not to be missed. The wild beauty of the Breton landscape is reflected in the spirit of its folk. This maritime region, long a favourite with British holidaymakers, is proud of its history and culture and likes to consider itself independent from the rest of France. In many ways Brittany shares similarities with its Celtic cousin, Cornwall. There’s a recognisable ring to place names, the traditional, white washed cottages have that chocolate-box appeal and seafood is always on the menu. The Breton language divides this region’s landscape into Armor (coast) and Arvor (forested interior). Brittany is proud of its past. Fascinating museums preserving the local heritage and traditions abound, and the old ways are kept alive at village fetes where visitors and locals sit down, en masse, to feast and enjoy traditional Breton customs and costume. On many saints’ days throughout the year, pilgrims still gather to parade through the ancient parishes.
The region’s northern Cote d’Armor extends from the wide expanse of Mont St Michel Bay and its iconic tidal island topped by an ancient abbey in the east, through the sandy beaches of the Cote Emeraude – historic St Malo, Dinard and the Rance estuary to the west – where a detour inland finds delightful, Medieval Dinan.
The Cote Granit Rose around Perros Guirec is a magnificent stretch of coastline where pink-granite boulders form dramatic headlands. Westwards, Atlantic rollers crash against the Finistere coast and its islands, with the naval port of Brest sheltering in the Elorn estuary. We have a selection of Brittany villas along this stretch of coastline.
Below Brest, the pretty Crozon Peninsula stretches its fingers into the Atlantic. This headland lies inside the Parc Regional d’Armorique which reaches inland to Huelgoat, where pleasant walks through ancient forests can be enjoyed. Across the Baie de Douarnanez, to the south, lies the impressive Pointe du Raz headland, often regarded as the ‘Land’s End of France’. Inland, the ancient cathedral city, Quimper, and preserved village of Locronan, are worth a visit.
South of here, the coastline softens, punctuated by wooded river inlets around the attractive holiday resort of Benodet, the fishing port of Concarneau and artists’ haven, Pont-Aven. Around here we have a selection of Brittany villas all with heated indoor pools. Below the busy seaport of Lorient, miles of unspoilt sands sweep down to the Quiberon Peninsula and the intriguing Golfe de Morbihan, dotted with small islands home to many prehistoric monuments. Not to be missed are the stone avenues of Carnac and the delights of old Vannes and Auray.
Moving inland, a patchwork of forests and fields covers much of the countryside. Near the pretty chateau town of Josselin, on the banks of the tranquil Nantes Brest Canal, lies the fairytale Foret de Paimpont, home to many legends of Merlin and King Arthur. Rennes the vibrant modern-day capital of Brittany, features an attractive old quarter as do nearby Fougeres, Vitre and Combourg.
